With globalization and the increasing diversity in workplaces, understanding and respecting the holidays of different countries has become crucial for fostering effective cross-cultural collaboration. If, like me, you’ve had the opportunity to work with colleagues from various countries in the Indo-Pacific Region, you’ll notice that beyond New Year’s Day and Lunar New Year, there are many other significant holidays throughout the year. These holidays often carry profound cultural and familial significance for your team members.
In addition, my team includes colleagues from Europe and the Americas, which means that Christmas and New Year’s Eve remain key celebrations for everyone. This combination of diverse cultural festivities makes our workplace rich and dynamic while presenting unique challenges.
This article shares my personal observations of these cultural celebrations and offers insights into the traditions and values behind them.
Lunar New Year in the Asia-Pacific Region – More Than Just a Chinese Holiday
Lunar New Year is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the Indo-Pacific Region. For many, it is the most important time of the year. Beyond Mainland China and Taiwan, countries like South Korea and Vietnam also celebrate this occasion in their own unique ways.
- Family Gatherings: Lunar New Year is synonymous with spending time with loved ones, sharing meals, and reflecting on the past year together.
- Traditional Activities: Customs such as putting up spring couplets, lion dances, and giving red envelopes are common, with slight variations across regions.
- Symbol of Hope: It’s a time when people wish for health, prosperity, and happiness for the coming year.
Highlights from Diverse Cultural Festivals
Apart from Lunar New Year, there are many other vibrant festivals in the Indo-Pacific Region. Below are some notable ones that I’ve observed in my team and their cultural significance:

- Activities: My Muslim colleagues take time off to reunite with their families, participate in morning prayers, and enjoy festive meals. During Ramadan, they observe fasting from dawn to sunset, and while it can be physically challenging, they remain incredibly focused and professional, which is truly inspiring.
3. Vesak (Sri Lanka)
- Meaning: Vesak commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha and is the most significant festival for Buddhists.
- Activities: Sri Lankan colleagues have shared how they light lanterns, participate in acts of charity, and meditate on this day. It’s not only a religious occasion but also a time for personal reflection and societal care.
4. Songkran (Thailand)
- Meaning: Songkran marks the Thai New Year and symbolizes washing away misfortunes to welcome a fresh start.
- Activities: Thai colleagues often show us pictures of the joyous water fights and family celebrations back home, showcasing the festive and lively spirit of the event.
5. Christmas and New Year (Europe & Americas)
- Meaning: Christmas is the most important holiday in Christian culture, and New Year is a time of global celebration.
- Activities: This season is probably familiar to everyone. During this time, not only do our colleagues from Europe and the Americas take time off to reunite with their families, but our office also gets festive with Christmas trees, gift exchanges, and even holiday gatherings, allowing everyone to share in the warmth of the season.
How to Manage Work During Holiday Seasons?
As a manager, leading a multicultural team requires being mindful of holiday schedules and their impact on work. Here are some practical tips to navigate this effectively:
- Understand Holiday Calendars: Familiarize yourself with major holidays in the regions your team operates in, especially those involving extended breaks, like Lunar New Year, Christmas, or post-Ramadan holidays.

作為主管,面對團隊成員來自多個國家與文化的情況,在安排工作、人力調動、以及跨部門和跨國協作時,節日假期的影響是必須要考慮的。以下是一些實踐的建議:
- 了解節日時間表:提前掌握各地區的重要節日,特別是那些會影響團隊成員工作日程的長假期,例如春節、聖誕節或開齋節結束後的休假期。
