Attending the Taipei AI Innovation Sharing Forum: Focus on the Taiwan Innovation Board (TIB) and the Startup Capital Market

This week, I had the chance to attend the AI Innovation Sharing Forum in Taipei. The event was bustling with activity and brought together many professionals interested in the AI industry and the startup ecosystem. Beyond networking with Taiwan’s innovative companies and listening to insights from industry leaders, the most striking part of the event was the detailed presentation by the Taiwan Stock Exchange on the features and purposes of the Taiwan Innovation Board (TIB).

TIB’s Vision and Comparison with Global Market Platforms

During the event, representatives from the Taiwan Stock Exchange highlighted the differences between the TIB and platforms such as Hong Kong’s Growth Enterprise Market (GEM) and the U.S. Nasdaq. TIB has modeled itself after Nasdaq, opting not to request companies to transition to the main board after achieving certain milestones, as GEM does. Instead, the focus of TIB is to allow companies to grow and thrive directly on this platform, offering more long-term capital market support.

This approach positions the TIB as a platform designed for corporate growth rather than a mere stepping stone to the main board. This structure minimizes disruptions that companies often face during a board transition and serves as a significant boost to both Taiwan and Asia’s startup ecosystem.

What’s more, the TIB has recently opened its doors to a wider range of investors, significantly enhancing market liquidity and trading volume. For startups with substantial development in R&D, products, and market strategies, TIB provides an ideal channel for fundraising and global integration.

If you’re interested in more details about TIB, I’ve also discussed this topic in a previous article titled “Taiwan Eases Investor Restrictions on Innovation Board: Boost for Startup Fundraising and Globalization”

Empowering Startups to Access the Capital Market

Keynote speakers at the forum emphasized how startups could leverage the TIB for financing and thereby strengthen their ties with the capital market. For example, this year, the TIB has taken significant steps to open the market to both domestic and international investors, boosting market activity. These measures not only improve efficiency in fundraising but also create more opportunities for international collaboration within Taiwan’s startup ecosystem.

The forum made it clear that the Taiwan Stock Exchange is dedicated to building a competitive and diverse platform for innovation. TIB isn’t merely a segment of the capital market; rather, it’s a specialized market tailored to the needs of startups, supporting their growth over the long term.

PlayNitride’s Success Story on TIB

One of the most compelling moments during the event was hearing the firsthand experience of PlayNitride Inc. (6854), the very first company to list on TIB. Chairman Lee Biing-jye shared why his company chose TIB for its listing and the advantages and opportunities it has brought to PlayNitride.

Lee explained that fundraising through TIB not only gave the company more visibility on the international stage but also provided ample resources for market expansion and technological development. Thanks to these benefits, PlayNitride has no intention of transitioning to the main board in Taiwan’s capital market. Instead, it believes that continued growth on the TIB will allow the company to gain even more robust support from investors while focusing on its growth and international strategies.

Highlights From the Event

Beyond the engaging sessions, the event also featured a well-organized registration area and exhibition space, providing participants with convenient access to materials and networking opportunities. The professional setup and attention to detail were evident in numerous aspects:

  • Venue Design: The conference venue featured a sophisticated design with blue and gold tones. The screens displayed the theme “AI Innovation Sharing Forum,” accompanied by a dynamic cityscape backdrop, creating a futuristic, tech-forward atmosphere.
  • Guest Seating: Each table was marked with “Reserved Guest Seats,” and items such as water bottles and notebooks were neatly arranged, reflecting the event’s professionalism and hospitality.
  • Speeches and Interactions: Prominent speakers from tech startups, venture capital firms, and governmental institutions took turns presenting. Among the various presentations, PlayNitride’s success story particularly captured the attention of the audience, making the session lively and engaging.

Personal Reflections

After spending a day immersed in the AI Innovation Sharing Forum, my biggest takeaway is that Taiwan’s startup ecosystem is entering a golden era. Through TIB’s connection to the capital market, startups can access resources and support at an earlier stage, enabling them to scale faster and secure positions on the global stage.

Additionally, the Taiwan Stock Exchange’s efforts to benchmark against international capital markets indicate that Taiwan is accelerating its integration into the global economy. These initiatives provide startups with better fundraising environments, and I truly hope to see more outstanding teams listing on TIB and shining in the global market.
