From “Computex Is Dying” to the Center of the AI World: How the AI Era Redefined Taiwan’s Value
Computex 2026 has just concluded.
Once again, the event attracted global attention from technology executives, investors, journalists, and industry experts seeking insights into the future direction of artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.
Today, it may seem difficult to imagine that only ten years ago, many observers questioned whether Computex had already become irrelevant. Some even argued that the exhibition should be discontinued altogether.
Yet those opinions were real.
The journey from being dismissed as outdated to becoming one of the most important gatherings in the global technology industry is not just the story of Computex. It is also the story of how Taiwan’s technology ecosystem was rediscovered by the world.
Ten Years Ago, Computex Really Did Look Like It Was Losing Relevance
To understand this transformation, we need to go back to 2016.
At the time, the global technology industry was fully focused on smartphones and the mobile internet revolution.
The industry’s biggest stars were Apple, Google, Facebook, and Amazon.
Investors were fascinated by apps, digital platforms, social media, and cloud services.
Compared to these trends, Computex—with its roots in PCs and hardware manufacturing—appeared increasingly old-fashioned.
Critics pointed out that:
- The PC market was declining.
- Smartphones represented the future.
- Google did not participate.
- Apple did not participate.
- Facebook did not participate.
- CES generated far more global attention than Computex.
Viewed through the lens of 2016, these observations were not unreasonable.
If one focused solely on the industry’s prevailing trends, it was easy to conclude that Computex’s best days were behind it.

What Many People Missed: Computex Was Never a Brand Show
Looking back, however, many commentators made a common mistake.
They evaluated Computex as if it were a consumer brand exhibition.
But Computex was never really about consumer brands.
At its core, Computex has always been about supply chains.
If CES showcases the products consumers eventually buy, Computex showcases the technologies and capabilities that make those products possible.
At Computex, visitors may not see the next iPhone.
Instead, they see:
- Servers
- Motherboards
- GPUs
- Power systems
- Networking equipment
- Cooling technologies
- Industrial computing platforms
- AI infrastructure
In other words, Computex has always focused less on the products themselves and more on the foundations that power the entire technology industry.
And those foundations happen to be Taiwan’s greatest strength.
The AI Era Forced the World to Rediscover Taiwan
After 2016, the technology industry experienced a profound shift.
Artificial intelligence moved from a specialized field into the center of global innovation.
The launch of generative AI applications accelerated investment on an unprecedented scale.
Suddenly, the world became obsessed with:
- GPUs
- AI servers
- High-bandwidth memory (HBM)
- High-speed networking
- Liquid cooling
- Data center power systems
- Advanced packaging technologies
As companies and investors began studying these technologies more closely, they discovered something remarkable:
A significant portion of the global AI supply chain was concentrated in Taiwan.
NVIDIA’s AI infrastructure depends heavily on Taiwanese suppliers.
Major cloud platforms operated by Amazon, Microsoft, and Google rely extensively on Taiwanese hardware ecosystems.
The AI revolution highlighted a reality that had existed for decades but had often been overlooked.
The world had spent years focusing on software.
Now it needed the physical infrastructure that makes AI possible.
And Taiwan was already deeply embedded in that infrastructure.

Computex Didn’t Change. The World Did.
One of the most fascinating aspects of this story is that Computex itself did not fundamentally reinvent its identity.
The world changed around it.
In 2016, the dominant belief was that software would define the future.
In 2026, the reality is that AI requires massive physical infrastructure.
Large language models require enormous computing power.
AI training requires vast amounts of electricity.
Data centers require new cooling technologies.
Enterprises require new computing architectures.
As a result, the technologies and industries that once seemed unglamorous suddenly became essential.
Taiwan happened to sit at the center of that transformation.
In many ways, Computex did not become more important.
The world simply started needing what Computex had been showcasing all along.
The Rise of Computex Is Really the Rise of Taiwan’s Technology Ecosystem
Viewed from a broader perspective, Computex’s resurgence is not merely the success story of a trade show.
It reflects the success of Taiwan’s long-term technology strategy.
From the technology transfer efforts of ITRI.
To the creation of the Hsinchu Science Park.
From the engineering talent cultivated by National Tsing Hua University and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.
To the semiconductor ecosystem built by TSMC.
From Taiwan’s server manufacturing leadership.
To its central role in AI infrastructure today.
These seemingly separate developments are actually components of a highly integrated innovation system.
When the AI era arrived, the world did not suddenly discover Taiwan.
Rather, it finally recognized the value of decades of investment that had already taken place.

A Lesson for Taiwan
The most important lesson from this story is not whether critics were right or wrong in 2016.
The deeper question is this:
Can we continue investing in capabilities even when they appear unfashionable?
In 2016, Computex seemed to be losing momentum.
Yet during that period:
- Engineers continued developing technologies.
- Research institutions continued training talent.
- Companies continued upgrading their supply chain capabilities.
None of these efforts attracted much attention at the time.
But they became the foundation of Taiwan’s position in the AI era.
The most valuable competitive advantages are rarely built during moments of celebration.
They are often built quietly, over many years, while few people are paying attention.
Conclusion: Taiwan’s Decade of Being Underestimated
Ten years ago, some people argued that Computex had become irrelevant.
Ten years later, global technology leaders are flying to Taipei.
Jensen Huang is here.
Lisa Su is here.
International investors are here.
Global media organizations are here.
AI startups are here.
Yet none of this happened overnight.
It is the result of decades of accumulated investment in technology, education, research, and industrial development.
The story of Computex reminds us of something important:
The most valuable strengths are often invisible while they are being built.
By the time the world finally recognizes them, they may already represent ten, twenty, or even forty years of accumulated effort.
And perhaps that is the greatest lesson Taiwan can offer in the age of artificial intelligence.

- Google 不參展
- Apple 不參展
- Facebook
Computex
「Computex

- GPU
- GPU
- AI Server
- HBM
Amazon

Computex
Computex
Computex
Computex

Computex
