U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest sweeping tariff policy has once again heightened global trade tensions and sent shockwaves through international capital markets. On Thursday and Friday, U.S. stocks witnessed massive capital outflows, triggering a wave of panic that spread across the globe.
With Taiwan’s stock market closed for the Tomb-Sweeping Day holiday during this period, it has yet to digest the impact of this financial epicenter. As such, Monday’s (April 7) opening is widely expected to be a pivotal moment — and potentially a sharp sell-off.
In this context, the movements of U.S. markets on Thursday and Friday will be closely watched by Taiwanese investors. Among global responses to Trump’s tariff policy, Vietnam has stood out as the country showing the clearest goodwill and willingness to cooperate with Washington.

Hit with 46% Tariffs, Vietnam Becomes the Biggest Victim
According to the newly announced U.S. tariff rules, exports from Vietnam to the U.S. are now subject to punitive tariffs of up to 46% — one of the steepest hikes among all targeted countries. Such a drastic increase places tremendous pressure on Vietnam’s export-driven economy.
The impact was immediately felt in the financial markets. On Thursday, April 3, Vietnam’s VN-Index plunged nearly 80 points, marking a sharp single-day drop of around 6% — one of the most significant crashes in recent years. Investor panic, foreign capital flight, and mounting uncertainty only compounded the downturn.

Vietnam Reacts Swiftly, Signals High-Level Cooperation with U.S.
Faced with the shock, Vietnam’s leadership moved quickly. On April 4, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, To Lam, held a phone call with Donald Trump. The two discussed future trade cooperation, with Vietnam expressing a clear willingness to address tariff issues.
Trump later told the press: “We had a great conversation. He said he wants tariffs on U.S. goods to be zero. He wants a free trade agreement. That’s very good.” He added that a face-to-face meeting would be arranged soon.
Vietnam’s rapid engagement and show of goodwill is widely seen as a proactive step to stop the bleeding in both its capital markets and export lifelines.

Vietnam’s Sincerity Boosts U.S. Stocks with Vietnam Exposure
These diplomatic signals quickly lifted market sentiment, particularly among U.S. companies heavily reliant on Vietnamese production — such as Nike, Lululemon, and Skechers. On Friday, their share prices rebounded notably. Nike, for instance, rose nearly 4.5% after plunging 14% the day before — a positive bellwether for investor sentiment.
This market movement has sparked speculation: as Taiwan faces a potentially brutal sell-off on Monday, could Vietnam-related stocks emerge as a surprising safe haven — alongside traditional defensive sectors like bonds, inverse ETFs, and consumer staples?

Searching for Shelter Amid the Storm
Trump’s sweeping global tariff policy may be unprecedented for most investors — myself included. Frankly, I don’t yet know what the most appropriate response will be.
After a few days of reflection and deliberation, I’ve personally decided to temporarily park my funds in relatively safer assets and gradually increase my positions in fundamentally strong stocks that have been unfairly sold off during market downturns — rather than exiting the market entirely. That’s why identifying these so-called “safer” targets is the direction I’m currently focusing my efforts on.
Do you have other ideas or strategies? Feel free to leave a comment and let’s tackle this storm together, one step at a time.
